Speculations are associated to what it was and where it is. This is a firm statement May a person be an amateur sleuth or a professional researcher, Atlantis will never cease to bewilder people just as it did after being mentioned in Timaeus and Critias, two essays by the Greek philosopher Plato in 360 BC. A topic like this translates to 438 titles from an online bookstore. One full feature movie released by the Disney company was Atlantis The Lost Empire.

Plato could not have fabricated the tale of Atlantis, a land not only beholding the sunlight but also bringing forth a wondrous abundance, or so many scholars and believers say. Why can’t we be sure if Plato was making Atlantis up or if he was quoting historians about a real place? Because he died about a dozen years after Atlantis was made known, Plato never got to tell if it was true.

Plato got Atlantis from Solon, a historian who really existed. For the skeptics, they think that Solon made things up but Plato bought the story. Even in consideration of Plato’s intellect, many still believe that he did not possess the abilities to come up with a detailed picture of Atlantis and so the ideas pertaining to the royal palace and cities being located in a series of rings, statues that were as intricate as could be, and even the bath houses could not have come from his brain.

Still there are a number of unanswered questions with regard to how long Atlantis existed considering how advanced the empire was, having the capacity to build nuclear bombs and flying machines, but it was destroyed around 9000 BC as said by Plato. Other than this, there is the question of where Atlantis is. There are theories that the island of Thira, devastated in 1470 BC by a volcano, was its location.

Off of the coast of Spain in the Azores in the Atlantic is one more location for Atlantis. One determining factor for Atlantis is the presence of underwater ruins. The European explorers even made use of Atlantis laden maps when they sailed around the world.

Rather impressive flying machines were made from the elephant skins that they had lots of there. When it comes to Atlantis, another location is off of the coast of today’s Bimini. After the destruction, there were still a number of survivors. Egypt became the new settlement for these survivors and it has been said that they shared their knowledge here. Storing traces of Atlantis is a secret chamber inside the Great Sphinx.

Ice only covered Antarctica around 4000 BC. This followed after a time of underground explosions and seismic upheavals. Many of them would have been cataclysmic enough to wipe out any existing civilization. Atlantis was a real island in the Atlantic Ocean and it was found out by an author who did much research on its existence a part of his writing work. It existed before a nuclear explosion destroyed it. Everyone then and now have access to a number of nuclear weapons. To blame for the demise of Atlantis was a nuclear explosion caused by people during the civil war.

Cordoned off as a realm only for international scientific endeavors, Antarctica offers countless opportunities for research that can not be obtained anywhere else on the globe. The great ice sheet of Antarctica is amazing because it covers most of the land and also provides hundreds of miles of permanent ice shelves over the ocean. Crossing the Ross Shelf Ice would take some time, as it is as big as the State of Texas. Moving northbound at 1800 feet per year, scientists are tracking the edge of ice sheet.

With almost two percent of all the water on planet earth, the continent holds about 90 percent of all the ice on earth. The most critical facet of maintaining ocean levels revolves around the great inland ice shelf’s stability. If it continues to melt, sea levels would rise visibly, and destroy seaports and alter coastlines.

If all this ice melted at once, then the sea levels would go up by more than 250 feet. That’s why it is so important for us to find out exactly what is going on with the Antarctic icecap’s health. The backward or forward movement of the ice doesn’t really matter to most. In theory, this enormous sheet of ice contains a complete record of all geophysical events from today all the way back to potentially a million years.

History’s actions, like smelting lead and the use of leaded gasoline, show in the ice. Measurements have been taken regarding the concentration of typical lead which precipitated over the surface of the ice during the prior 60 years. Because we have burned leaded gasoline, the decomposed lead alkyls have created an increase in the lead concentration on the surface of the ice, and these levels have been increasing steadily over the last ten years. A quick look at the serious nature of pollution can be seen with this issue.

DDT didn’t show up in the ice and snow on Antarctica, but penquins, seals and some fish did show traces of this pollutant. Space particles have always been entering earth’s atmosphere. These can be examined in the ice sheet and even dated according to their depth. Assuming that additional research uncovers that these particles contain a revolving pattern, then predictions concerning the amount and type of space particles that vehicles will run into can be determined.

Lichens make up a majority of Antarctic vegetation. Mites and springtails are the common animal life forms on the land itself. A wingless fly is the biggest land animal there. Remarkably, none of the insects on Antarctica can’t fly. The Weddell Seal and flightless penguin are mammals that live the farthest south; they live in the waters around Antarctica. To find food, the Weddell seal has been known to submerge itself for as long as 30 minutes and to depths of approximately 1,500 feet, which surprised researchers studying the creatures.

Adelie penguins make their nests on ice-free spots on the coast of Antarctica and then head northward during the frigid winters. No compass could compare with their ability to maintain a straight path. The use the sun, and their incredible biological abilities to do so. As a study, six of the Adelie penguins were released over 2,400 miles from their natural habitat and three of them found their way back within ten months. There are more that were let go near the South Pole. After they emerged, they studied their new environment, focused on the sun a bit, and then headed exactly in the right direction for their home nests.

The biggest creature ever to live contributes to this region’s productivity by its mere presence. Eating nearly one ton of shrimp daily, and weighing in at five times any past dinosaur, the great blue whale is nearing extinction. Antarctic waters house lots more species of fish than the Arctic does. With 90 percent of bottom living Antarctic fish only found in the Antarctica region, this proves to be an astonishing example of the capability of the Antarctic Convergence.

Snow and the cold is something this gentleman likes after working for the Atigun Pass, high above the Trans Alaska Pipeline. Hence, once this retired civil engineering expert heard more about the local university’s alumni association’s plans to travel to the white kingdom, Antarctica, he began to be all excited. This made me think of it as a marvelous idea. Antarctica has been mesmerizing real explorers even armchair ones in spite of its reputation of being the coldest and least hospitable place on Earth.

But the White Continent is not an easy or cheap place to get to so each year, lesser travelers come and see it. Challenging indeed for before one can reach the Antarctic Peninsula, he has to start from Argentina’s southernmost city known as Ushuaia, travel a thousand kilometers for a couple of days through the Drake Passage, grim with the world’s roughest sea weather.

Such experiences are not only profound, but are also life changing. Men traverse this land since the late 1800s after it has been discovered in 1820. But there were no commercial voyages to the region until after a few years after that the Antarctic Treaty was ratified, specifically in the year 1959, after this land was established as a natural reserve, a place for peace and science to thrive.

Yet while the travel industry evolved, it didn’t really take off until the collapse of the Iron Curtain early 1990s. But many tour operators seized ice rated expedition vessels from Russia and turned these into vessels for commercial travel, sensing the opportunity as there came no money to fund any scientific developments. Seasoned world explorers come in to visit, looking for something new and exciting. But some of the travelers, on the other hand, aspire to be like Sir Ernest Shackleton, whose legendary endurance expedition back in 1914 got written in history as the most spectacular tale of expedition survival.

This spectacular land will enable you to cruise among gigantic glaciers and icebergs and fill the landscape, promising enjoyment especially among artists, photographers and nature lovers. Here is where you shall see everything from seals and penguins not to forget whale varieties from killer, humpback and minke. Just don’t look for polar bears, which live in the circumpolar north.

Without the existence of developed ports and harbors, tourists had no choice but to hop on board zodiacs, which are small rubberized boats that are inflated. Get your camera ready as you may now kayak against icebergs, stand with penguins and even hike with them. You can expect the naturalist standing right there, ready to answer any questions you might ask, from the region’s history, wildlife, marine animals and even glaciology.

His travel was spent aboard a 5 star cruise liner for eight days while he was in Buenos Aires for three whole days and both featured lectures about landscapes and local fauna. He was so thrilled with the unforgettable penguin rookery trips he took along with naturalist tour guides. After these short legged birds curiously drew near him, they bravely put on an unforgettable show.

But not all people get to enjoy Antarctic travel as much as the other people. Some environmentalists look down on the growing number of tourists, as these might affect the delicate ecosystem of Antarctica, posing threats to wildlife breeding and reducing populations especially of the rarest of species. It is good to know that the international alliance of Antarctic tour operators have volunteered to adopt the standards to minimize the ill effects of tourism to the White Continent’s environment. If all tourists, companies and natural programs would comply with the good operational and conservation practices, the region would remain unblemished.

He adds that television shows further compound the problem as these make us think that animals including the thousands of penguins that finds home only in Antarctica as just forms of entertainment. Animals begin to ease out if they are used to the human presence. But this long term disassociation from the real world has become a huge quandary. Conservationists do not readily agree. But as people come into Antarctica, he argues, the more tourists will feel for this continent.

This tiny creature is only 1/100th of an inch long. Looking very similar to a spider, it dines on algae and fungi. One scientist from Hawaii was able to find the pink mite within 309 miles of the South Pole. This same scientist found lichens growing 266 miles from the Pole, which is the nearest any living thing has ever been found.

Insects and their family are the only animals that can stay on Antarctica all year long. A recent magazine article reported this. To find the over 56 species of arthropods that live on Antarctica, you’ll need some kind of magnification. One insect you could easily see is about the size of a common horsefly. It’s a wingless fly. Their lives are paused until the air temperatures reach 32 degrees Fahrenheit, which is the freezing point of water, and they resume their daily activities.

The waters surrounding the continent are starkly different than the land. They are bustling with life from microscopic shrimp to the blue whale, which is the largest living being on the planet. Marine life was observed by scientists recently using a small steel capsule designed for observation and recording data. Spying out into the water through the six available windows, the scientists took turns being submerged. They even utilized a hydrophone to listen into the sea life.

Though there weren’t a lot of fish to be seen, there was a jelly fish that sported tentacles of up to thirty feet in length. Seals were constantly surrounding the chamber. They were very curious about it. The hydrophone picked up all the chirping and whistling that seals typically make when communicating. One scientist said he’d never heard such noise before.

Without these sounds, Weddell seals may be unable to get around in the dark waters, or to communicate with each other. The navigation theory makes a lot of sense when you consider finding food and air in the darkness of the Antarctic. Analysis of the seal sounds is being performed in the Antarctic. Because they are outside our hearing range, some of the sounds can’t be detected by humans.

Scientists don’t know yet how the Weddell seals make the sounds. Both their nostrils and mouths are tightly closed when in the water. There have been recorded dives by these seals that have been as deep as 1500 feet, which is the deepest any mammal has ever gone. One seal was able to stay submerged for over 28 minutes. This is also a record. One zoologist was lucky enough to get a sample of a mother seal’s milk. Seal milk has a much higher fat ratio than human milk does. This is one of the reasons that baby seals can gain weight more quickly than any other mammal. In just six weeks time, a seal pup can increase its weight by five times.

Scientists have investigated Antarctic seas wearing special frogman dive suits. Colorful seaweeds, including red ones, filled the ocean’s bottom. In addition to this, scientists found red and white star fish species, five-foot-long worms, and sponges that measured four feet in diameter.

The insurance policy can be taken by dedicated companies, at the point of booking the holiday, travel agent, booking agent etc.

Travel insurance covers all your risks like holiday cancellation, theft, loss, damage to personal possessions and money, medical expenses in abroad, overseas funeral expense, accidental death, injury benefits, legal assistance, delayed departure at the airport or sea port etc. After taking travel insurance which covered maximum benefits you can feel free to travel across globe.

There are several different travel insurance policies available in the market that can be purchased. Annual insurance will cover you for 12 months. In this, you can choose any time for traveling within a year and you don’t need to take it again and again. Single trip insurance will cover for a specified time period and tour. This is beneficial if you are traveling occasionally. Multi trip insurance will cover a set amount of tours. In this, your time will be saving, you don’t need to take insurance before each tour. It is good for those who travel frequently. Backpacker insurance provides service when you traveling alone with no fixed hotel or travel plan. Ski and Snowboarding insurance require for high risk sports. If you are planning your tour with exotic sports this travel insurance will cover that risk also. Student insurance has a different policy for younger travelers.

Travel insurance is just like other insurance in which you have to pay premium and get all benefits of policy. Premium can be one time payment or in installment depending upon policy. If your policy is single trip insurance then you have to pay full premium at once and in annual insurance it can be payable in installment also. In multi trip insurance you can pay in installment and take all benefits of insurance.

Finally, insurance provides you tension free and better trip. There are also some intangible benefits in insurance it gives you satisfaction that you are safe from all hazardous and your trip is hassle free.

When you are planning to go abroad for vacation you should search the best possible travel insurance before booking your tour with travel agents. There are many companies claiming that they will provide you the best insurance for all types of travel, but are these companies really offering the best and economical deal to you.

Tannoy Ltd is an English manufacturer of loudspeakers and public-address (PA) systems. The company was founded as Tulsemere Manufacturing Company in London in 1926.

The name Tannoy is a syllabic abbreviation of tantalum alloy, which was the material used in a type of electrolytic rectifier developed by the company. The brand had been trademarked by 10 March 1932, on which date the Tulsemere Manufacturing Company was formally registered as Guy R. Fountain Limited.

It became a household name as a result of supplying PA systems to the armed forces during World War II, and to Butlins and Pontins holiday camps after the war. This usage is current as late as early 2010. Tannoy is now based in Coatbridge in Scotland, and is part of the Danish-based TC Group. Tannoy is famous for its ‘Dual Concentric’ speaker design which places the tweeter behind the centre of the medium or bass driver. ‘Dual Concentric’ is a trademark although Tannoy is not the only speaker manufacturer to design coaxial drivers. (See KEF or Cabasse.)

Tannoy’s image is particularly linked to studio monitors on the one hand and its Prestige range of home speakers on the other. Prestige speakers use Dual Concentric speakers and are easily recognisable by their ‘vintage’ design.

The term ‘tannoy’ is often used generically in colloquial English throughout the British Commonwealth to mean any public-address system, particularly those used for announcements in public places; although the word is a registered trademark, it has become a genericised trademark. The company’s intellectual property department keeps a close eye on the media and will often write to publications who use its trade name without a capital letter or as a generic term for PA systems, in order to preserve its trademark.

References

BBC World Service broadcast 27 February 2010 referring to the use of “Tannoys” in warning seaside dwellers to evacuate to higher ground due to a possible tsunami caused by the Chilean earthquake of that day (heard on WNYC FM)

After my official Montreal bike tour, my person explorations of the Lachine Canal and my chat with Andr from a Roule, I decided to go for a tiny stroll to explore Montreal’s Port area which was hustling and bustling with celebrations on this Canada Day. I strolled out on Jacques Cartier Pier to an outdoor concert stage where by two well-known Canadian singers, Kim Richardson and Sylvie Desgroseillers were enchanting the audience with Mo-Town and R&B melodies.

I walked east and happened onto a huge playground region on the tiny island inside Bassin Bonsecours that was a family entertainment zone. Kids have been sliding up and down and in and out of a whole variety of huge inflatable slides. Freestyle skiers were jumping off a large ramp and performing summersaults and various aerial acrobatics. The whole area was packed with people enjoying themselves on a beautiful summer day. I walked up Place Jacques Cartier and into a small pedestrian street called Rue des Amables which is full of portrait artists and galleries. At the end of this tiny street I found my dinner destination: Galiano’s.

Galiano’s is located in a 200 year-old building on a little cobble-stoned street in Old Montreal. Formerly a “bote chanson” it opened its doors eight years ago. The restaurant stretches over two floors with an open area from the middle and a wooden staircase leading up to the second floor with seating on an interior balcony. The street-side patio adds additional seating capacity and ambience to this rustic restaurant.

Always a big fan of Italian cuisine, I was looking forward to a filling meal following a day packed with exercise and activities. The whole area around the restaurant and Old Montreal in general was absolutely hustling and bustling with people and everyone was in good spirits, ready to celebrate since it was Canada Day. Street performers have been entertaining the crowd. At just before 6 pm it was still a bit early and I was fortunate to find a seat from the lounge region in the restaurant that features several tables flanking an arrangement of leather couches in front of the fireplace.

For any few minutes I was able to catch the owner, John Tsinas, to find out more about this culinary establishment. John is part of Montreal’s famous Antonopoulos family that owns a variety of hospitality restaurants and hotels in Old Montreal. His uncles are silent partners in Galiano’s. John’s younger brothers Manny and Peter also work with him inside business. At 40 years of age John is the oldest, and the two other brothers are each five years apart. John says that Manny is the people person and today Manny was seating customers, tryig to keep up with the sheer onslaught of customers that were just streaming into Galiano’s.

Manny is also the man using the creative ideas and he was the one that came up while using idea for lounge area and some from the new decorating styles featured at Galianos. Another new idea is to use a little balcony area above the entrance door as a location for any DJ or some live music. And a wine cellar next to the entrance is presently under construction and will be opened inside near future.

John has a lot of experience within the hospitality industry: he started working in the restaurant business at age 14 and has worked his way up all the way through the bottom. He even ran a food warehouse for McGill University which included restocking the vending machines and was a waiter at three different restaurants prior to opening Galiano’s. John added that he still thinks like an employee and because of his hands-on experience he always treats his staff members with respect. His working style is very hands-on, he says that today he will be calling out the orders in his kitchen and preparing them for the waiters.

Galiano’s is recognized for its Italian cuisine and its generous portion sizes. Everything is produced from scratch at Galiano’s. John mentioned their signature dishes: Scaloppini alla Veronica, their Antipasto Misto, a Filetto Tre Sapori, home created Lasagna as well as their Quattro Stagioni Pizza. John recommended that I try Galiano’s Calamari Fritti. Just about 10 minutes right after my order a steaming plate of juicy and tasty calamari arrived, the perfect introduction to a filling meal. I followed it up with a Galiano Salad: a huge plate of salad with cold cuts and cheese. John wasn’t kidding when he talked about huge portion sizes!

John of course had to get back to work after our little chat, but I thoroughly enjoyed my evening meal and by the time I was finished, the lineup was stretching all the way out the door and down the street. Galiano’s is obviously a favourite destination for many in Old Montreal and for me it was a great starting point for my evening discoveries which would include the official Canada Day Celebrations and a big concert in the Old Port of Montreal.

The tough features of Antarctica, such as ice, snow, isolation, high winds and raging seas are still not enough for many tourists, especially the hardcore adventurers will be coming in aboard cruise liners this coming tourist season, except around 130 of these visitors. Such a total may only be 400 people more than the number of visitors last season, specifically from mid November through February, it was still able to jump 70 percent higher than the previous 6,585 seasons that Antarctica opened itself to tourists. Watchers of the White Continent have growing trepidation over the environmental state in Antarctica and also reveal that there can be a flood of annual visitors going by the thousands.

On average, an Antarctic cruise can go up to twenty thousand dollars for each individual, while the average 14-day cruise costs a heavy six to seven thousand dollars and this does not include round trip air fare to Ushuaia, Argentina, specifically in Tierra del Fuego which has become the most known common departing point, used 90 percent of the time. Despite the fact that Antarctica appears to be indestructible especially with the cost of venturing there as well as the impossible climate and geographic characteristics, the fact is that its ecosystem may soon begin to suffer greatly from the throng of travelers.

The project director spearheading the Antarctic Project believes that the beauty of Antarctica must be seen by many people but there is a growing need to cap tourists from flooding it every single year, along with prohibiting more sites to be explored. This Washington founded project works as the secretariat for over 200 environmental groups throughout forty different countries. While people promise to protect Antarctica’s conservation efforts after seeing this wondrous place, there is still danger in so many people loving it too much as it is a very fragile destination.

A major concern of this director, who favors a limit of 6,000 visitors a year, is that most tourists visit the same few places on the 800 mile long Antarctic Peninsula, which has the continent’s biggest concentration of penguins, seals and birds. But it is extremely rare that tourists groups setting foot on land exceed a hundred members. It is so bad that animals get disrupted when there are visitors for they cannot get food for themselves or for their young and they are also not able to rest.

Science is unable to see yet if this will have a long term impact, she further reveals. Tourists touching the plants and not abiding by garbage disposal laws are two of Antarctica’s environmental quandaries. By reinforcing the Antarctic Treaty, we understand why when travelers go ashore, large and experienced staffs make sure they have very little impact if none at all, and this also sheds light as to why most tour operators abide by such environmental guidelines. That series of agreements includes the 1959 Antarctic Treaty, since signed by 43 nations, plus environmental protocol that since Jan 14, 1998, has banned mining and oil drilling and provided other environmental safeguards, including fishing limits and occasional Antarctic cruises.

Zodiacs are now being used by the tour association, based in New York that voluntarily adopted the 100 person limit for shore visits, for these motorized rubber boats are more convenient. Of the 15 vessels in Antarctica this season, nine fly Russian flags. With the Soviet Union’s break up, an opportunity for tour operators came as several small ships have been made available. Those ships, including an icebreaker and several other vessels whose hulls were hardened against ice, carry from 40 to 80 passengers. Now, we see how obvious the problems of Antarctica keeps concerning more and more parties. We can only wait for the day in the future when, looking back, we would be so relieved that our worries were in vain. But as we wait for science to bring forth the answer, it is best to take it upon ourselves and restrain our trips to the Frozen Continent.
